5 Surprising Facts about LASIK

Since it was approved by the FDA in the ’90s, LASIK surgery has helped millions of Americans enjoy clearer, sharper vision. Despite its popularity and well-documented history of safety, there is still a lot of misinformation and questions surrounding LASIK.

In this post, Dr. Ernest Kornmehl of Boston area  Kornmehl Laser Eye Associates reveals some of the lesser-known facts about LASIK that often surprise his patients.

1. Quick Procedure

One of the most unexpected parts of LASIK is how quick of a procedure it is. The entire procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes per eye, but the laser correction only requires less than a minute.

2. Rapid Recovery and Results

LASIK patients are usually surprised by the rapid recovery and quick visual results. Some patients can see more clearly almost immediately after surgery; others notice clearer, sharper vision a day or two after surgery. Most patients are able to drive and resume work the day after surgery or shortly thereafter.

3. Practically Painless

LASIK is not a painful procedure. Anesthetic drops are used to numb the eyes during surgery, and patients may feel slight pressure or nothing at all while the laser treatment is being administered. Some describe the sensation of having an eyelash caught in the eye, but most patients experience very little discomfort.

4. Can Be Performed Without Using Any Blades

Traditional LASIK involves using a handheld surgical blade to create the thin flap of tissue in the surface of the cornea, before sculpting the underlying tissue with a laser. But Dr. Kornmehl  performs bladeless LASIK using two different kinds of lasers. First, he uses a femtosecond laser to create the corneal flap; then, he uses an excimer tissue to reshape the cornea.

5. Allows Patients to Live Life to the Fullest

Most LASIK patients are astonished at the big and small ways their lives change after surgery. It’s reassuring to be able to get up and go anywhere without first stopping to put on glasses or put in contact lenses. Sports and activities like hiking, biking and running are easier and more enjoyable. Traveling is easier and more convenient. And most people vastly prefer the way they look without glasses!
