What to Expect the Day After LASIK Surgery

If you’re considering LASIK eye surgery, knowing what to expect during recovery is just as important as understanding the procedure itself. When you choose Dr. Kornmehl and his Boston-based practice, you’re selecting a team with the experience and technology to support your vision goals and your post-operative care every step of the way.

Immediate Post-Surgery Sensations

The day after your LASIK procedure, your eyes may still feel slightly irritated or watery, and it’s common to experience light sensitivity. These symptoms are typically mild and temporary. You might notice some blurry vision or a hazy film over your eyes, which should gradually improve as your corneas continue to heal.

You’ll be advised to rest your eyes as much as possible the first 24 hours. It’s important to avoid rubbing your eyes, even if they feel itchy or dry. This protects the corneal flap that was created during surgery.

First-Day Recovery Guidelines

During this visit, Dr. Kornmehl will check that the healing process is progressing as expected. Be sure to bring any questions or concerns to this appointment, especially if you’re experiencing symptoms like unusual discomfort, reduced vision, or increased light sensitivity.

You should plan to take the day off from work, avoid strenuous activities, and stay out of dusty or smoky environments. Driving should only be resumed once Dr. Kornmehl confirms your vision is stable enough for safety.

Vision Changes and Stabilization

Your vision may continue to fluctuate for several days to weeks following surgery, which is a normal part of the healing process. Most people notice significant improvement within 24 to 48 hours, but it’s common for fine visual clarity to take a bit longer to stabilize.

You may also experience halos or glare around lights at night. These effects usually fade over time, but wearing sunglasses during the day can help manage discomfort.

Supporting Your Recovery

Use prescribed eye drops as directed to prevent dryness and inflammation. Artificial tears can also be helpful, but only use products approved by Dr. Kornmehl. Rest your eyes frequently, especially from screen time, and avoid makeup or creams around the eyes until Dr. Kornmehl advises it’s safe.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle—hydration, proper nutrition, and sleep—also contributes to a smoother healing experience.
